Garden design in Melbourne by Small Spaces.Small Spaces Garden Design is a Melbourne based garden design studio. We have been designing gardens since 1997.

Kate Smalley, the principal founder of Small Spaces Garden Design started out studying horticulture at NMIT Parkville (now Melbourne Polytechnic). That was followed with more study at Burnley College.

Kate started designing gardens based on her own lived experience. Kate spent many years living around inner city Melbourne in flats, and finally ended up in her own place with a very small concrete courtyard. From there she honed her skills, searching for ideas through a swathe of garden books that never really gave her the picture for her own small garden design. So, she designed her own, and has been designing small gardens in Melbourne ever since.

Her designs incorporate local indigenous plants, Australian natives, and exotics. She likes her client’s individual tastes to dictate the direction of the garden and then use the most appropriate plants and materials to achieve the end result. Sustainable practices are threaded through the whole process, from soil preparation, use of local materials, planting, efficient irrigation, and, recycling.

Small Spaces has a wealth of knowledge and experience to bring to your design.
