A small garden needs a tree

Even a small garden needs a tree. My favourite tree for a small garden has to be the Crepe Myrtle. It is so versatile, dry tolerant when established, and it tolerates the heat. You can see it all over Melbourne in flower at the moment, from the hot pink of original form of Lagerstroemia ‘Tuscarora’, to the pale purple of ‘Zuni’, and the white of ‘Natchez’.

‘Zuni’ I find particularly useful for small gardens. It grows to around 3-4 metres, so it won’t overtake a small space. I use it to create depth, it has a lovely branch structure, gorgeous bark which shows through in winter, and of course in late summer it has lot’s of flowers.

Ideal for a small Melbourne garden.
